Entgegen der gestrigen Ankündigung werden wir doch in den Norden fahren, wo die Windscherung besser ist. Die Zellen im Süden wurden immer weniger attraktiv berechnet. Seit einigen Modellläufen tauchen in Kansas schöne Zellen auf. Das Rätsel wird sein, auf das richtige Pferd (die richtige Zelle) zu setzen.
Contrary to yesterday's announcement, we will be heading north after all, where the wind shear is better. The cells in the south were always calculated to be less attractive. Beautiful cells have been appearing in Kansas for some calculations. The puzzle will be to bet on the right horse (the right cell).

Unser erstes Ziel ist Shamrock, das wir in 90 Minuten erreichen. Dort gibt es eine erste Lagebesprechung und dann heißt es warten und warten. HRRR simuliert nördlich von uns sogar eine Zelle mit Zellsplit... Die Luft könnte dazu stimmen!

Da wir heute noch viel Zeit bis zum eigentlichen Chasing haben, möchte ich noch auf andere Parameter eingehen, die für das Stormchasing wichtig sind.
In meinem Nowcasting-Tool habe ich immer eine Anzeige geöffnet, die sich VIL nennt. VIL steht für Vertically Integrated Liquid und ist ein wichtiger Indikator für das Hagelpotential in Gewitterwolken. Ein hoher VIL-Wert zeigt an, dass genügend Wasser in flüssiger Form in der Atmosphäre vorhanden ist, was die Möglichkeit der Hagelbildung erhöht. Bei starken Aufwinden in der Gewitterwolke können diese Wassertropfen in höhere Regionen der Atmosphäre transportiert werden, wo sie gefrieren und zu Hagelkörnern heranwachsen können. Die Informationen im GRLevel3 (Nowcasting-Tool) sind sehr genau und erlauben eine Abschätzung des Hagelpotentials eines Gewitters und wo der Hagel niedergehen wird.
Ich werde hier während des Chasings ein aktuelles Bild hinzufügen.
As we still have a lot of time before the actual chasing today, I would like to look at other parameters that are important for storm chasing.
I always have a display called VIL open in my nowcasting tool. VIL stands for Vertically Integrated Liquid and is an important indicator of the hail potential in thunderclouds. A high VIL value indicates that there is enough water in liquid form in the atmosphere, which increases the possibility of hail formation. With strong updrafts in the thundercloud, these water droplets can be transported to higher regions of the atmosphere, where they can freeze and grow into hailstones. The information in GRLevel3 (nowcasting tool) is very accurate and allows an estimation of the hail potential of a thunderstorm and where the hail will fall.

Auf eine solche modellierte Zelle warten wir, hier blau umrandet. Diese Zelle bewegt sich so schnell, dass wir ihr folgen können. Schon bei ihrer Entstehung und auf ihrem weiteren Weg hat sie eine gute Luftmasse, die die Entstehung von Tornados begünstigt. Ab dem Nachmittag könnte es losgehen. In der Nacht geht es weiter nach Kansas/Nebraska (nördlich von KA) - dort sind die Bedingungen optimal.
We are waiting for such a modeled cell, outlined in blue here. This cell is moving so fast that we can follow it. As soon as it forms and on its further path, it has a good air mass that favors the formation of tornadoes. It could start in the afternoon. During the night it will move on to Kansas/Nebraska (north of KA) - the conditions there are optimal.

Beim HRRR beträgt der Vorhersagezeitraum 18h, ausser bei den Berechnungen um 00 UTC, 06 UTC, 12 UTC und 18 UTC, wo für 48h gerechnet wird.
Simply select a weather model. HRRR and RAP are short-term models that are recalculated every hour. At the start, you are automatically taken to the precipitation forecast. With the HRRR, the forecast period is 18 hours, except for the calculations at 00 UTC, 06 UTC, 12 UTC and 18 UTC, where calculations are made for 48 hours.

Wir warten noch vor Ort. Die beste Luftmasse für Tornados ist hier. Glaubt man dem HRRR, wird alles wieder so, wie es am Sonntag ursprünglich berechnet war...
Keine Auslösung in den letzten Modellläufen bei uns. Wir warten hier noch maximal drei Stunden und machen uns dann auf den Weg nach Kansas. Dort wird es dann in der Nacht zur Sache gehen. Dann ist volle Konzentration angesagt.

No triggering in the last model runs. We'll wait here for a maximum of three hours and then make our way to Kansas. We'll get down to business there during the night. Then full concentration is the order of the day.

An unserem Standort wird sich nichts mehr tun. Die Dryline kommt auf uns zu, die Wolken lösen sich alle auf. Wir fahren nach Norden und sehen in einer Stunde weiter. Unten habe ich versucht, den ungefähren Verlauf der Dryline darzustellen.
Nothing more will happen at our location. The dryline is coming towards us, the clouds are all clearing. We head north and see what happens in an hour. Below I have tried to show the approximate course of the dryline.

Nach unserem Aufenthalt in Arnett OK fahren wir weiter nach Norden. In der Nähe vom Red River, Texas, gab es einzelne Zellen, die Hagel mit einem Durchmesser von 1,75 Inch lieferten - mehr nicht. Etwas westlich von unserer Position ging etwas in die Luft, HRRR hatte dies gut erfasst. Das sind die Gewitterzellen, nach denen wir gesucht haben.
After our stay in Arnett OK, we drive further north. Near Red River, Texas, there were isolated cells that produced hail with a diameter of 1.75 inches - nothing more. A little west of our position something went up in the air, HRRR had captured this well. These are the thunderstorm cells we were looking for.

Auf dem Weg nach Norden machten wir einen Fotostopp. Der Sonnenuntergang war wunderschön. HRRR simulierte plötzlich diese Zelle, die wir auf dem Satellitenbild gesehen hatten. Diese sollte in Kansas für 3h der Chef sein. Als diese besagte Zelle genau westlich von uns war, legten wir den nächsten Stopp ein, um eine Zeitrafferaufnahme zu machen. Aber die Zelle hatte nicht genug Aufwind. Sie muss noch in bessere Luft kommen. Es ist bereits dunkel geworden und wir setzen unsere Reise in Richtung Dodge City KA fort.
We made a photo stop on the way north. The sunset was beautiful. HRRR suddenly simulated this cell we had seen on the satellite image. It was supposed to be the boss in Kansas for 3 hours. When this said cell was just west of us, we made the next stop to take a time lapse. But the cell didn't have enough updraft. It still needs to get into better air. It was already getting dark and we continued our journey towards Dodge City KA.

Wir umfahren Dodge City. Nachdem wir genügend Boden gut gemacht haben, folgen die ersten Blitzaufnahmen. Die Zelle ist noch nicht alarmiert, hat sich aber prächtig entwickelt.
